Long bio

about 290 words

Stine Smith is the founder of DistilAI, which builds best-in-class, documented business processes for small business owners and founders, then puts AI to work running them under written rules. Every build ships with new Standard Operating Procedures and a training plan for the staff whose roles change.

Before DistilAI, Stine spent 20 years in the space between the boardroom and the IT room. She began at IBM in marketing and then sales, moved into business process optimisation for large financial institutions in Copenhagen, London and Paris, then led business transformation across the Middle East, in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. A job offer from Fonterra brought her to New Zealand and into change management: making sure people actually use the systems they are given, from the executive floor to the warehouse.

In 2019 she co-founded Good Change with Kristy Hunter, a sustainable homecare brand sold through Woolworths Australia, Foodstuffs and around 900 retail stockists across New Zealand and Australia. When Australian logistics squeezed the business, the two founders rebuilt it on AI. A named AI team now runs the marketing, the inbox, the reporting and the first draft of every customer reply, with a human reading everything that goes out. A full email campaign that took two days now takes an hour and a half. The story ran as a full page in The Post, The Press and the Waikato Times in September 2026.

Stine is Danish, born and raised in Copenhagen, and lives on an avocado orchard in Tauranga, New Zealand, with her husband and three boys.

In her own words

first person, about 100 words

I started in IBM sales and consulting, specialising in process optimisation and change management across Central Europe, the Middle East and New Zealand. Then NZ changed everything: the mountains, the pace, the perspective. Now I'm building DistilAI, an educational platform helping small business owners and founders use AI to work smarter and better, so we get time back for real human connection. I love connecting with people who build boldly and lift each other up. My happy place is trekking the mountains (and my hometown, Copenhagen). There's always a better way, and I like finding it.

Keynotes, workshops and panels for business owners and their teams. Live or virtual. Every talk is built from what actually runs in Stine's own business, with the screens on show.

  • Write it down first. Why AI fails without a process.

Nothing that lives in someone's head can be handed over, outsourced or scaled. The order Stine did it in: know the numbers per unit, write the process down, put AI on top, one department at a time. For owners who have ChatGPT open and nothing actually running.

  • How to get your whole team using AI, not just you.

Twenty years of change management applied to AI: rules from the top, a policy pack, a training plan for every role that changes. AI as a team upgrade, never a staff replacement.

  • Where to start: marketing first, one department at a time.

The 90-day order for a small team, the 10-80-10 split (10% human going in, 80% AI doing the boring bit, 10% human going out), and what two people can realistically run.

  • AI is a strategy decision, not a tech decision.

Whoever owns strategy owns AI. You do not need a tech background; you need a clear system and the ability to say plainly what the AI does. Why the rules have to come from the owner, or the process walks out the door with the staff.

  • Starting a company AI-first.

What you would set up on day one now: the five-document AI Brain, written rules, named AI roles with a human approving everything that goes out.

Questions Stine answers well.

A starting point, not a script. Ask her anything; these are the ones that get the best stories out of her.

  1. You spent 20 years getting people to actually use new systems before AI existed. What does that tell you about AI adoption now?

  2. Your own use of AI "started on a dire note". What happened?

  3. What is the order a small business should do this in?

  4. What does a named AI team look like day to day? Who is Morgan?

  5. You say "write it down or die". What do you mean?

  6. Where does the human stay in the loop, and why does that matter to you?

  7. Does AI replace staff? Why does every DistilAI build come with a training plan?

  8. What is the first thing an owner should build, before any automation?

  9. What is the biggest mistake you see owners make with ChatGPT open?

  10. What did running a product brand across two countries teach you that consultants miss?

  11. What does your morning look like?

  12. What is a quick fix you refuse to recommend?

Eight things that aren't on her LinkedIn.

For the warm-up question, the intro, or the bit of the piece that makes her a person.

  • Worked the 1998 World Cup in Montpellier as a stadium hostess, hired for the languages, in a Yves Saint Laurent uniform.
  • Spent a full day as "the token Western lady" on a Thai TV shoot during a semester at Thammasat University in Bangkok.
  • Once drove to an IBM customer in rural Denmark with a paper map and ended up near the German border. Google Maps came a little late into her life.
  • Biked through London to work in a suit, no helmet, until her manager quietly asked whether she could afford the tube.
  • Spent New Year's Eve 2000 inside Angkor Wat, before the ropes went up.
  • Gets up at 4:30am a few times a week for calls with AI practitioners in North America, then packs three lunchboxes.
  • Moved the family to central Copenhagen for a year in 2024. The boys now speak Danish.
  • Does a hut-to-hut backcountry hike in New Zealand every year.
